Easy Mason Jar Double Boiler Tip

How to Make An Easy Double Boiler

Easy Double Boiler Tip

Using a double boiler is the best way to ensure that butters, waxes and oils melt in a controlled, gentle fashion. Very few of us actually have a double boiler, though!  You can easily make one yourself by setting a cake rack in the bottom of a saucepan, but if you can’t find a cake rack that fits in your pan, here’s an even easier tip:  try using the ring lid of a Mason jar.  Simply set the ring in the bottom of a skillet or saucepan, fill it with at least 1” of water and place your container with butters an oils on the ring.

Bring the water to a gentle simmer and add water as necessary as it evaporates. Both the regular and the wide mouth rings work.  This is a great way to make small test batches of lotions because you can fit at least four rings in a single skillet, making it possible to heat the heated aqueous and heated oil phase for two batches of lotion. (Just remember to label your containers!)  If you can’t find a Mason, you can also use a metal cookie cutter or biscuit cutter, too.

We hope this tip makes it even easier to make your lotions, butters, lip balms and scrubs. Happy crafting!
